1935 Heritage Meets 2026 Luxury: A New Chapter for a Dewey Icon

The Walsh Property Redefined - Vacation Rental Units - Part 1 of 2

If you’ve spent any time in Dewey Beach, you’ve likely seen the name "Walsh." Since 1935, this land has been a staple of our coastal community—a place where generations of families made their summer memories.

Recently, I had the honor of stepping inside this piece of history to document its latest transformation. A friend’s husband and team has taken these legendary grounds and turned them into something truly spectacular.

The Transformation: From Coastal Classic to Modern Luxury

I spent this week capturing and editing the first of two sessions for a three brand-new luxury units on the property. The attention to detail is stunning. While the spirit of the original land is still there, the interiors have been elevated to a whole new level.

As a photographer, I’m always looking for that "hero shot"—the one image that really tells the story. Whether it’s the light hitting the bay or the expansive feel of the rooftop views, these spaces were designed to make you stop and stare.

But the real hero through my lens, lies beneath and cannot be seen. It’s in the property’s rich history.

A Legacy Worth Preserving

What makes this project special isn’t just the new construction; it’s the history beneath it. This corner was once the home of Alice "Mom" Walsh, who famously never turned anyone away.

I recently found a fascinating oral history video where the family shares stories of a house so full that people slept under the dining room table, and a "breezeway" that was the best seat in town to watch the world go by. It was also the site of Walsh Electronics, and the setting of a legendary standoff when the state came to widen Route 1!

You can see the vintage photos of "Walshland" in this Cape Gazette feature. Looking at those old images made me even more grateful for this new era.

Inside the Units

Today, the sleeping bags on the floor have been replaced by high-end linens and coastal chic design. Each unit has its own personality, with layouts ranging from 4- and 5- bedroom penthouse gems to a massive 7-bedroom flagship.

These vacation rental units are going to redefine what it looks like to stay in Dewey.

The Best is Yet to Come

I truly enjoyed every minute of documenting this transformation. After diving into the history of Walshland, I walked through these new units with a deep appreciation for the roots of this ground. While the buildings have changed, the spirit of hospitality remains.

I can’t wait to come back and finish this project as the final touches are put on these beautiful exterior spaces.

I truly believe that with these new units, the tradition of family, laughter, and unforgettable Dewey Beach memories will be kept alive for decades to come.
