Weathering the Storm: A Memorial Day Proposal in Bethany Beach

We’ve all heard the saying, “If you want to make God laugh, tell Him your plans.”

Well, over Memorial Day weekend, Mother Nature didn't just laugh—she threw a full-blown tantrum. We’re talking a relentless five-day rain streak, what felt like freezing temperatures, and 20 mph winds whipping off the ocean. It was the kind of beach weekend where you stay inside.

But Jake had a plan.

We are all wondering if she knows at this point…Bethany Beach, DE - Mich Mallon Photo

Jake traveled from Boston with a ring and a mission: to surprise Maureen, a Bethesda native who grew up vacationing in Bethany. After seven years together, this was the moment.

To keep it a total surprise, my kids stepped up as "models" for a decoy photoshoot, giving us a reason to brave the elements. They looked absolutely miserable in this image, but rest assured they were having the best time imagining what was about to go down!

And good ole’ Jake had this plan contrived with her friends and twin sister since New Years! Can you imagine the anticipation?

When we arrived, the boardwalk was pure chaos—a holiday weekend running race had its finish line planted right in our path.

To find some space, we headed down the beach access. There, with the kids swarming around trying not to get swept up in the wild wind of flying sea foam and whipping hairdos, Jake got down on one knee.

Against all meteorological odds, the rain paused for a perfect, two-hour window. Maureen was completely blindsided and utterly ecstatic—the freezing wind and ocean spray didn't even seem to register.

Later on, we overheard Maureen joking with her family and crew about the whole setup. Apparently, when they were getting ready, she couldn't understand why everyone was so stressed about her outfit and knee-length socks. She actually told them, "It’s not like I’m getting engaged or anything!" Little did she know...

The elements ended up being the perfect metaphor for their future. Life is bound to throw unexpected storms and chaotic finish lines your way, but Jake and Maureen proved that those storms don’t stand a chance when you're built to weather them together.

A Quick Note for the Guys Planning a Proposal:

If you’re stressing about the perfect weather, the perfect location, or things going exactly to script—take a breath. The chaos usually makes the best story. As long as you have a plan to get her there, a photographer ready in the wings, and a little flexibility, the rest will fall into place.

Congratulations to Jake and Maureen!
